  152. DETAILED PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

  154. The HP 27285A Router is a 4 port (2 Ethernet/802.3, 2 Synchronous
  155. Ports), high-performance, multiprotocol router and bridge. The
  156. hardware and hardware-specific firmware is developed by HP Roseville.
  157. Processing is handled by a Motorola 68020 running at 25MHz.  The
  158. Ethernet LAN (Sonic) and WAN (SGS-Thompson MK5025) interface chips are
  159. the same as those used in the HP 28674A Remote Bridge. It is packaged
  160. in an SCP (single communications processor) enclosure similar to the
  161. latest ICF bridge and hub product packaging.  Additionally, 3MB of on
  162. board DRAM is available as buffer space; 1.5MB of Flash EEPROM stores
  163. the routing and bridging firmware.

  165. Flash EEPROM technology allows update/upgrade of this firmware via
  166. console port or network interfaces, without physical access to the
  167. router pc assemblies.
  168.  
  169. Functionally the HP 27285A Router is equivalent to other HP Routers in
  170. terms of routing and bridging capabilities, it is a non-scaleable,
  171. low-end addition to the ICF router product family. It can
  172. transparently connect several local or geographically dispersed
  173. networks forming a "internetwork" or network of networks. The ability
  174. to operate concurrently as a router and a spanning tree bridge allows
  175. the HP Router to support multivendor networks that use a variety of
  176. protocols and media.
  177.  
  178. Most of the firmware is a technology transfer from Wellfleet
  179. Communications, Inc. and is functionally equivalent to the software
  180. products available for other HP Routers, ie. it supports the same
  181. routing, bridging and management functions.

  199.      is a bridging function rather than routing protocol but is

  202. The HP OpenView Interconect Manager 300/400 (27630A) and Interconect
  203. Manager 600/800 (27631A) provide TCP/IP network management
  204. functionality on HP 9000 systems for managing all HP Routers.
  205. Currently available, they include the capability to manage non-IP
  206. protocols (eg.  DECnet, IPX, AppleTalk, etc.) and a graphic
  207. configuration editor.

  209. The HP Router can route and bridge packets concurrently and provide
  210. internetworking among multi-vendor, multi-protocol Local Area Networks
  211. (LANs). Both LAN to LAN and LAN to Wide Area Network (WAN)
  212. communication are provided within a single system.  Standard protocols
  213. like TCP/IP, DECnet, and X.25 are routed while other protocols, eg. HP
  214. DTC 1.0 and DEC LAT, are bridged.

  216. The HP Router will first try to route a packet if it supports the
  217. packet's network layer protocol, (IP, XNS, DECnet, etc.).  If it does
  218. not support the packet's network layer protocol, then the packets will
  219. be bridged.  The ability to route as well as bridge packets gives the
  220. versatility to the HP Routers to support networks with varied
  221. protocols.

  223. For routing, The HP Router operates at the network layer and selects
  224. one of potentially many paths to forward a packet based on a variety
  225. of parameters including delay, hop count, cost and link congestion.
  226. The ability to accommodate meshed topologies and to support redundant
  227. links makes it very suitable for large LAN/WAN networks.  The HP
  228. Router provides subnet isolation to clearly delineate administrative
  229. boundaries.  This allows network managers to localize problems and
  230. easily administer large, heavily used networks.
